Historical Significance
Considered the mother church of Norfolk's Black Baptists, First Baptist's congregation was organized in 1800 and originally consisted of whites, Free Blacks, and enslaved individuals. The church land was acquired in 1830, but the buildings standing today date to 1906.
Physical Description
The church is an example of the Romanesque Revival, an architectural style which became popular throughout America beginning in the 1880s. The church was designed by Chattanooga architect Reuben H. Hunt in 1906.
