First Baptist Church, Salem
Text
Historical Significance
Established in 1867, First Baptist Church has a long, rich history in Salem's South Bend community, an African-American community settled by emancipated blacks after the Civil War.
Prayer services were initially held in the home of Sister Elizabeth Campbell on Cove Road, now Craig Avenue. Local ministers delivered the first sermons, volunteering their services. Later the prayer services were moved to the home of Reverend Walker Smith, on the corner of White Oak and Calhoun Streets. Rev. Smith became the first pastor of the church. The founding date of 1867 is inscribed on the cornerstone.
