Historical Significance
The Third Street Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of Virginia's few surviving churches erected before the Civil War. The Virginia Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was formed at the Third Street Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1867. The black congregation was organized in 1850 when they left the Trinity Methodist Church.
