Samuel Bibbins Cemetery

Historical Significance

The Samuel Bibbins Cemetery is one of the oldest known African-American cemeteries in Northampton County. Samuel Bibbins purchased property from George W. Brittingham in 1851. The first recorded burial in the cemetery occurred in 1867 when Sam Bibbins, a namesake nephew of the owner, died of pneumonia. The last person to be buried here was Littleton Robert Bibbins, a son of the original owner, who was laid to rest in 1927.

Physical Description

The Samuel Bibbins Cemetery covers an acre and contains many graves. It is located near the end of Captain Howe Drive, south of Eastville.
